What are the differences between mined diamonds and cultured diamonds?

Diamonds have exceptional hardness, durability, brilliance, fire and scintillation. These key features distinguish them from other gems. Over the decade’s manufacturers have developed techniques to recreate the synthetic “diamond look” at affordable prices which ultimately led to the recent development of cultured diamonds also known as laboratory-grown diamonds. Over the last 60 years, GIA has closely monitored the movement alongside principle research on endless natural diamonds in the ten’s of millions. With the extensive experience and scientific research, GIA is able to accurately identify natural diamonds to cultured diamonds. It is a process of distinguishing internal grinning and light refraction.

With buyers protection at the forefront of our business, it is imperative that the differences are explained so each buyer can make an informed decision. Some might favour cultured diamonds for their own reasons while others prefer to choose naturally mined diamonds. At The Perfect Diamond, we are able to offer both options, rest assured each diamond has a unique serial number inscribed so authentication and identity is guaranteed.

According to GIA’s studies, there are several differences between natural diamonds and cultured diamonds. Diamonds are created or formed only in the precise moment when atoms collide under extreme pressures and temperatures. Natural diamonds formed within the upper mantle of the earths crust. Typically sitting 160 kilometre underground for millions of years. Cultured diamonds are grown in strict laboratory conditions that mimic the upper mantle conditions. They do in-fact exhibit the same chemical composition, crystal structure and optical properties. To determine the difference is complex but not impossible. Due to the artificial growing environments, some visual characteristics under magnification include colour zoning, metallic imperfections, weak strain patterns and internal graining distinguishes the differences.

Looking Beyond the 4 C's

Diamonds have additional features that are not stated on a certificate. A diamonds character or make is the overall look and feel. Two diamonds that are identical on paper can look very different in person. Putting the 4C’s aside, we look for ideal luster, cutting proportions, fiery scintillation, and no overtones affecting the beauty of the stone. This link demonstrates the differences:

At The Perfect Diamond, we also consider how well each facet is matched from the top side to the pavilion side. This is especially for round diamonds. The precision of facet alignment will give the result of perfectly symmetrical hearts and arrows.

Differentiating between excellent to ideal cut. The Holloway cut advisory is a tool that allows us to weave through the grades. Despite GIA not officially grading for ideal cuts, we are still able to identify between excellent and ideal. As a general rule, we look for a score anywhere between 0 to 2. HCA scores for fire, spread, scintillation, and brilliance. It is exceptionally rare to score four excellence in all four categories. The categories are, excellent, very good, good, fair, and lastly poor. It is common to have three excellence and one very good in the categories.

What does eye clean actually mean?

At The Perfect Diamond, it essentially means that from 25-30cm from the unaided eye, you are not able to see any imperfections within the diamond. Under close inspection you are also not able to see any inclusions from the top of the diamond. If you happen to locate any clarity characteristics, then the diamond is described to be non eye clean. this is only applicable to SI1-2 diamonds. It is highly important to us that the visuals of the diamond are accurately and truthfully described for maximum transparency.

It is important to mention that, diamonds are not graded from the pavilion side hence the term eye clean does not apply to the bottom side of the diamond.

For further understanding, go to …. there are illustrations showing the differences.

Peace of mind

Each diamond comes with a certification, laser engraving, and verified date. To ensure you have The Perfect Diamond, we confirm all laser engraving in-house via our professional-grade microscopes. The laser engraving confirms the diamonds identity and authenticity. The serial number is specific for each diamond and is noted on under comments which read “laser inscribed” followed by the number. In the event you lose your certificate, you are able to search on GIA’s website and retrieve a PDF version of the certificate. Laser inscriptions are located on the girdle of the diamond, see example just below.

Life time warranty

To keep your jewellery piece at its very best we recommend an annual essential service. The essential service will include an individual check of each diamond, claw tightening, steam cleaning, rhodium plating and a soft polish. By completing the rhodium/polish it will bring your jewellery piece close to its original brilliance and shine.

Rhodium plating is complimentary just before the wedding. Any polishes thereafter will incur a $110 fee. We recommend a rhodium polish once every few years to maintain the longevity.

Each jewellery piece is strictly quality assessed before we confirm a collection time. We use the highest grade metal quality, diamond grades and craftsmanship based on Australian standards and by Australian diamond setters. By doing so, we deliver a superior jewellery piece that will last through the generations.

If you happen to experience an issue with your jewellery piece, we are more than happy to asses it during an appointment so a cause can be determined. Any manufacturing faults will be covered by The Perfect Diamond. Any accidental damage caused by wear can be either covered by your chosen insurance provider or a quote for repair will be provided.

Repair or service performed by anyone else other than The Perfect Diamond will void the warranty. All fine jewellery will encounter normal wear and tear this is especially for rings. Our hands are in use every day and endure pressure from daily activities. The Perfect Diamond does not under any circumstance cover the loss of the central diamond or jewellery item. We highly recommend getting all items insured in-particular before you leave for your honeymoon.

**Some examples of common jewellery issues that would not be considered manufacturing defects include:

The discolouration of precious metals caused by strong chemicals however this is highly unlikely.

Claws catching, wearing out, or bending due to damage causing stones to fall out.

Deformed metal shape from its original circular state from excessive hard force pressure, for example, rigorous gym exercise which includes any metal to metal contact, yoga in-particular handstands/backbends/downward dog, boxing and any other forms of contact.

Caring for your diamond and jewellery piece

Diamonds measure 10 on the Moh scale which makes them the hardest material. They are remarkably durable but not indestructible. If miss handled, they can chip or crack at the right cleavage point by a forceful blow. Diamonds also can become loose or damage if in contact with another diamond, though very unlikely.

We recommend liquid cleaning your jewellery piece in warm to hot water with liquid detergent. Clean with a soft bristle toothbrush, we find baby toothbrushes work best as the bristle can get into tight spots. The last step is to blow dry with a hairdryer. Once these steps are completed, you can enjoy the glistening sparkle.

Alternatively we highly recommend the Smart Clean Ultrasonic from Kleentek. It performs a soft oscillation with an automatic 3 minute timer. It’s an Australian brand based in Queensland. Find out more here or to order directly with them: https://kleentek.net.au/shop/ultrasonic-cleaning/ultrasonic-cleaning-specialised/smartclean-ultrasonic-cleaner/

If you feel the diamond has become loose, please call The Perfect Diamond for assessment on 02 80729931 or email at concierge@theperfectdiamond.com.au

How do I get insurance and who do you recommend?

Getting insured is always necessary incase there is theft, loss or damage. While home and content usually offers coverage based on theft at home, it may not extend to outside your home or claims relating to accidental damage and loss. It’s important to review your current policy and also know if you are covered for any interstate or international travel.

At The Perfect Diamond, there is only one insurer who without a doubt we recommend and trust and that is QReport insurance. The best time to get protected is when you are preparing to leave the jewellers office and most importantly during any travel or honeymoon plans.

We looked into all the different insurance providers and feel most secure and confident with Qreport Insurance. We strongly believe it comes down to transparency, honesty, support and genuine care in sensitive times.

We’ve seen how other insurers prioritise money over customer care and experience. They are looking to replace whatever item lost/damaged at the cheapest price possible.

QReport is the only company that will give you an additional 25% to cover any market inflation or changes.

Excess is fixed at $100 and you are covered for world wide travel.

Speak with your diamond specialist and we will arrange a quote so you can get covered.

We welcome you to read through their 5 star rating from 550+ clients on Google.
